Spain Log
So far we have only had the chance to visit the Baleares Islands of Spain, but they are pretty nice. They
are much greener than greece or italy and lucky for us september is late season so not too crowded!
Now these islands pretty much cater to mega yachts and marina fees can run as high as 200 euros a
night so we are on free moorings or anchored out as usual.
The island of Cabrera is a national park and has some great rugged coastline. Unfortunately it requires
a permit you can only get on Mallorca at the main town (free permit) and we did not know that so they
gave us only one night on the mooring here. Also it is very limited where you can walk to, but there are
some ruins, a fort/castle, and a nice hike to the lighthouse as well.
Mallorca is just a big island with tons of tourists and tourist towns. Any strip of sand is covered with sun
bathers and this time of year it seems to be older fat british and german tourists so a walk down a beach
can be more revealing than you may care to see. The rules of what can be considered acceptable on a
beach seem to cover just about everything. We have seen way too much stuff happening on the beach
that would shock the average north american. I won't go into details, but I am sure you can imagine it.
Ibiza we just arrived at and so far we have had bad weather with seriously dramatic thunder and
lightening shows. I hope they continue to miss the boat! The next few days are supposed to be more of
the same with higher winds and heavier rain. Great... I should finally get the dirt off the decks if this
continues. The med is just a bit less dusty than the red sea! The days are getting colder and so is the
water so snorkeling and showering is more of a drama now, but we should be out of the med by the end
of the month I hope.
Formentera is pretty nice, but an unofficial nudist area so beware of large naked europeans. The main
island is ok, but there is a smaller island just north that is neat to explore and has free moorings.
From Formentera we did a straight hop to La Lina, which is right next to gibraltar. The town is not
exciting at all, but Gibraltar is a short walk away and worth a day to explore. We did it all by walking, but it
makes for a really long tiring day.
